CRIME
It is time for our lawmakers and the courts to take the side of the law-abiding citizen and not that of the criminal. I favor laws imposing longer sentences, and greater restrictions on suspension of sentences and probation and parole for persons convicted of serious, violent crimes and drug pushers. In the past, bills along this line have been defeated in the House Courts of Justice Committee, now composed exclusively of lawyers. I believe this committee should also have non-lawyers among its members.
Municipal police ought to share in the same State funding formula as Sheriffs' offices. There should be educational and training requirements for these officers as there is for Sheriffs.
EDUCATION
I am especially conscious of the importance of education and I have made my children aware of this. I have five children, three of whom have completed or are attending college and my youngest son is a high school student. Years of my life have been spent working with the public schools in our area to provide a better education for our children. As a legislator, I will have a greater opportunity to continue my efforts for quality education.
