Beginning this month, the Rap* pahannock News will carry a calendar of government meetings. Clip it and put it up somewhere—tacked on a bulletin board or taped to an ice box. Then make it a point to show up at a few of the sessions.
We’re consistently amazed at the low turn out for meetings of the School Board, Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission. People tell us that they don’t know when the meetings are held or that the meetings are scheduled during the day when working men and women can’t attend.
We don’t think either excuse stands up. A call to county offices can easily establish the time, hour and place of a meeting. As for daytime meetings, it might help if the Supervisors rescheduled their sessions for evening hours but we doubt it. A few people would come for the first couple of night meetings and then we think attendance would drop right off. After all, the School Board divies up 80 per cent of the county’s money in its operations and only two or three interested citizens show up for School Board night meetings.
