In far stronger terms than had been expected, Mr. Carter embraced not only Howell but the entire “Rainbow ticket.” He repeatedly urged Virginia voters to elect the whole slate during speeches in Roanoke, Norfolk and Williamsburg.
Nor is there any question that the President’s visit gave a powerful boost to the morale of the Democratic partisans. Between eight and nine thousand turned out for the rally in Roanoke’s Civic Center. Well over 5,000 were on hand in Norfolk’s Azalea Gardens.
About 140 couples paid the requisite $1,000 to attend a super-fundraiser in Williamsburg. It was an impressive response.
But the real question is, of course, how much—if any—did the visit sway the broad body of the Virginia electorate who, just six weeks hence, will choose between the “Rainbow ticket” and Republican John Dalton and his running mates.
If past visits by such toplevel dignataries are any guide, the impact may be substantial indeed.
