Following a cassette film of the Alpine slide in Bromley, Doug Baumgardner, local attorney representing the Rappahannock Ski Area, read several letters—“some unsolicited, some solicited” — from county residents in favor of Moore’s proposals.
—Clarence Baldwin, Supervisor from Hampton Magisterial District in which the ski area is located, wrote that he “enthusiastically endorsed” the ski area’s reopening because it would “maximize potential” for employment and business while minimizing tax burdens on county residents.
—Mrs. and Mrs. E. M. Jones acknowledged that “some development there is inevitable’’ and maintained that Moore’s plans would be “compatible with our environment and our way of life.” However, they also noted misgivings about the traffic impact on Harris Hollow Road.
—Nationally syndicated columnist James J. Kilpatrick, a resident of Woodville, wrote that the reopening of the ski area would have advantages subject to certain conditions. Emphasizing a landowner’s right to do with his property as he wants as long as it doesn’t harm his neighbor, Kilpatrick maintained that the BZA would have to determine whether the reopening of {he ski area would cause “significant damage in contrast to annoyance.
