consider it essential that our national security investment not be deemphasized in the years ahead, and it would be my intention to continue working for fully safe levels of national defense as a member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. My concern in this matter has been reinforced by the classified briefings given the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, on which I also serve.
No individual could expect to please all citizens of this very large and diverse congressional district on each and every one of the issues presented for debate and vote—there were 471 recorded votes in the House during the session recently ended—but I believe my overall record is consistent with the thinking of the great majority of the citizens of the 7th District. I am prepared to stand on it against the second-guessing and promises of any challenger who was not faced with these hundreds of decisions.
