In 1781, the President’s House was the headquarters of Lord Cornwallis during the British occupation of Williamsburg. During that time, the house was also used as a hospital for American allies, the French. It was damaged by fire but later restored by the French. During the Civil War, the building was again occupied, this time by Union troops.
In 1928-32, the President's House was restored as part of the Williamsburg restoration financed by John D. Rockefeller. It was modified to eliminate 19th Century features that had been add-4 ed.
The program headed by Dr. Conger will complement the structure both inside and out with authentic furniture and decorative objects.
The program committee has published a list of “most wanted” . items. This list includes European and Chinese porcelain plates, bowls and decorative objects, silver, rugs, chandeliers and scones, screens, paintings of historical figures, landscapes and genre scenes, fireplace equipment and brasses.
