Attorney General’* Opinion

At last Thursday’s meeting, Commonwealth’s Attorney Henry Lee Carter reported that he had finally received an opinion that day from the state’s top legal advisor on whether forest land qualified for use value taxation in an AF District. However, the answer that Orange County Supervisors waited over six months for raised as many questions as it resolved.

After Carter announced that the letter from Anthony Troy was “exactly what I thought the Attorney General’s opinion was going to be’’ and passed out copies to the Board, Supervisor Robert Edwards asked Carter to read and clarify the four page opinion.

Carter tried but he didn’t appear to make much headway.

According to Carter, the opinion held that use value taxation would have to be given to forestal land within an agricultural and forestal district.
