While browsing in an antique shop in Sperryville several years ago, she opened a chest of drawers to find an aged doll in a dreadful state of disrepair staring up at her. She walked away, finished browsing around the shop, came back to the doll and finally bought it.

Back home, Phyllis found some extra aircraft fabric from her father’s airplane with which she covered the badly worn body of the doll, starting it on the road to recovery. She later discovered another broken doll in the basement of an old house and decided to learn to repair them professionally.
