"You may have accident coverage,” Ms Bruce responded. She noted that the policy available to county employees was very limited and didn't even include major medical benefits. She said shte had talked with a Blue Cross representative about having her policy upgraded and was told this was impossible unless the county agreed to pay at least half of each individual premium, currently $27.48 per month.
Since the group policy couldn't be upgraded, Ms Bruce said she asked about switching to more comprehensive individual protection, even though it would mean paying higher premiums. According to Ms Bruce, Blue Cross-Blue Shield refused to sell her an individual policy since she already qualified for a group.
