Bill Yager, a former Orange County Supervisor, and also a farmer, noted that farmers plant forests and pay taxes on forest land for at least 30 years before they get a penny in return, and during that period, forest property doesn’t cost the county anything in services. Instead, forest land benefits Orange County by providing beauty, preserving water, preventing erosion and serving as a wind barrier, Yager said.
