"The original penny doll was discovered in a barn in England during World War I and brought by a mail order house in Williamsburg. The doll coast a pennv. and was so named. Penny dolls are also called “peddler dolls,” said Phyllis, “after the 1760 peddlers who roamed through England peddling their wares. My peddler doll is a ‘Notion Nanny’ who carries an assortment of fabrics, sewing accessories, trims, kitchen utensils, pots, pans, baskets, candies and yam. You might say she is a walking general store. Queen Victoria had a collection of Penny wooden dolls that she enjoyed dressing in a variety of attire,” she added.
“Generally people have the impression that dolls are only for children. Quite the contrary,” said Phyllis, “Just as many adults have dolls as children. Who is to say how old you must be to have such a fancy as a little friend?”
