According to Rappahannock Superintendent of Schools Dr. William Bloomer, the county school system is also adopting measures to lower electrical usage. Bloomer said night lighting and heat had been cut back and teachers and administrators encouraged to turn off lights in well lit rooms during the day.
Extra-curricular activities have not been eliminated. Bloomer continued. However, he added that adult education classes have not begun as scheduled due to the energy shortage.
Coal stocks at the high school reached the critical level last week with only a half day's supply on hand. The high school gets its coal from a non-union mine in Tennessee but the distributor had transport problems and wasn’t able to deliver on schedule, according to Bloomer. Currently, the high school has enough coal to probably last through the week, he said.
