To measure the effort put forth by an individual student or to ir« tsure individual IQ’s is ne thing; the “grade” c>b. aned will indicate either or both. But to try to conceal either or both of these things behind group "ability levels” does no one any good and, in fact, is treason to our students. If a student does his very best and gets only a “C”, let us recognize and applaud him. But let us not slip him an "A” under some contrived formula to make him and his parents feel good; when he faces the real “A’s” in life after school he will be a very confused a.nd bitter young person, if sve do. Having the same diploma as the real “A”, he “knows” that his failure to achieve the same advancement in his work is caused by something else that is not his fault, i.e., discrimination of some kind.
