To the editor: In a letter to a constituent who had written to him concerning the Equal Rights Amendment, our Senator Nathan Miller indicated his opposition to the Amendment in part because of the “biological differences” between men and women. Does he also advocate limited citizenship for handicapped people or for persons of certain ethnic origins on the basis of "differences"?
This allegedly impaired physiology of American women seems to account for the United States’ lowest percentage of women working in law, medicine, engineering and the professions among all the major nations in the world. In spite of laws which should protect women from discrimination, men hold ninety-siz percent of the over$15,000-a-year jobs in the U.S.
If you support ratification t of the Equal Rights Amendment, please write to Senator Miller. The United States has for too long shamelessly based its
ideology op “life, liberty and the pursuiftof happiness for all,” while uking women as a poorly paid pool of cheap labor limiting them in education, job opportunities, advancement, working and retirement benefits; discriminating against them in insurance rates and ' inheritance laws; maintaining restrictive property and business laws; and paying them lower social security returns. Senator Miller hasn’t lifted a finger to help women working in the home or on the job. The Equal Rights Amendment is in committee for the sixth consecutive year in Virginia. It’s time it’s voted out of committee and, hopefully, passed. A silent voice only supports the opponents of the Equal Rights Amendment.
