Cable Cuts
Nearly 7,870 customers of Central Telephone Company of Virginia had their telephone service interrupted in 1977 by cable cuts that were preventable. “The problem is accidental buried telephone cable cuts,” explained Baxter F. Smith, Centel division plant manager in Charlottesville. Smith reported there were 439 separate incidents in 1977 in which underground telephone lines were damaged by construction activity in its Virginia service area.
“The cost of repairing these cuts was more than $35,900,” said Smith.
