Most grains are good sources of magnesium but farmers wanting to cut costs may be tempted to reduce feeding rates too quickly at the on set of the grazing season in April. This could lead to increased numbers of cases of grass tetany in late winter and early spring unless magnesium supplementation is adequate.

Supplemental magnesium can be provided to cows during periods of increased requirements by several methods. Such measures should begin at least two weeks before calving. Daily consumption of ‘/a to 1 ounce of magnesium oxide (MgO) should provide complete protection.

When feeding grain to beef cows during stress periods, mix 3 pounds of MgO to 97 pounds of grain and feed 2 pounds pier day to provide 1 ounce of MgO.

When feeding a protein supplement to cows consuming low protein rations, mix 12 parts of MgO to 88 parts of supplement and feed at least ‘/a pound daily. MgO can be spinkled evenly over silage at feeding time with good results.

High magnesium blocks also offer protection but may be more expensive than othei methods of supplementation. No matter what method is used, it is essential that cows get the recommended amount of MgO on a daily and continuous basis as cows can store only limited amounts of magnesium in their bodies.
