SKIP, a special program for special kids, got underway last week in Rappahannock. Administered and funded by the Rappahannock-Rapidan Mental Health and Retardation Community Services Board, SKIP is designed to give educable mentally retarded adolescents an opportunity for socialization and recreation. The youngsters meet on Fridays after school for activities that are intended to be both informative and fun.
Last Friday, coordinator Sallie Washington took her group to the courthouse in Washington for a tour of Sheriff W. A. Buntin’s department. Several of the eight boys and girls were a little nervous about visiting the county jail but before the afternoon was over, the youngsters were crowded into the Sheriffs office, completely at home with Buntin and his deputies.
