The girls were spellbound as she explained the work involved in making the Peu Piu, a skirt of reeds, and then did Poi dances for them. The Poi are colorful balls on strings. The girls then learned rythmic stick games and a special Poi dance called the Canoe Poi, which they will teach to other Girl Scouts and Brownies attending the Association III event in Charlottesville, March 18.
The Canoe Poi, with the girls sitting one behind the other in a long line and beating on the ground rhythmically with the Poi, commemorates the Maori migration to New Zealand about 1300 A.D. in seven canoes.
