Highway crews battled through the night and morning to keep Routes 211 and 522 clear as gusts piled snow back over the two primary highways. Once the winds settled, secondary roads were attacked with plows. Late Monday afternoon, assistant resident engineer Doug Bywaters said he expected to have all paved and gravelled roads in the county plowed by midnight.
Sunday’s new snow fell on a layer of old snow from last week’s storms that had been packed down on roadways like a sheet of ice, forcing schools to close from Monday morning through Friday.
