They tried cooking to pass the time, baking dozens of chocolate chips and creating masterpieces of sandwich ingenuity. Lunches were a real treat, complete with homemade potato chips. Unfortunately, the novelty of the kitchen also passed as clean-up work began to drag. It was probably for the best—a few more days of homemade chips and we’d all have gained 25 pounds.
Next, we gamed outselves to death. First game tournaments of backgammon, three dimensional tic-tac-toe and the family favorite, a fast moving quadruple solitaire marked by blood-chilling screams and bruised fingers. We finally used all those Christmas gifts from aunts, uncles and friends as we worked our way through the entire game line put out by Parker Brothers, Milton Bradley and every other major toy company. We skipped around to Scrabble, Boggle, Aggravation, Sorry, Master Mind and Password, taking time out to catch Jeopardy and Password Plus on television. Then, to top it all off, we wound up in a sixhour marathon world conquest game.
