Chemicals On “Priority One"

According to Askew, state policy allows snow removal chemicals to be used only on ‘‘priority one" roads Rappahannock County has two—Routes 211 and 522.
These roads should be at bare pavement as soon as possible or at least 24 hours after a storm ceases. Askew said. He noted that a mix ol salt, calcium chloride and abrasives is generally used to clear priority one routes.
Calcium chloride is most effective because it continues to work at low temperatures but, at $40 a ton. Askew said, it's expensive. Salt costs less—$30 to $40 a ton—but in order for it to melt snow and ice, it must be applied
