Rappahannock County—calls for roadways to be passable without chains as soon as possible or within 24 hours after snow stops falling.
The rest of the county's paved roads rank as “priority three” and state policy states that these routes should b^0 passable without chains within 48 hours after a storm.
“Priority four"—all •gravelled— roads—are to be passable with chains within 48 hours.
Primarily, snow plows are used to open priority two, three and four roads to traffic. Askew said. As a general practice, sand and gravel is put down only on hills, curves and other potential trouble spots.
In addition to the cost of snow removal itself. Askew said, the use of chemicals on surface treated roads (priority two and three) would result in substantially increased expenditures for repairs after spring thaws and normal seasonal break-up.
