human snow removal machines. The kids had no choice but to follow along after we put the fear of God
into them. “Either shovel or be on restriction until you’re 18,” they were told. With a choice like that, they both shoveled.
We started at about 11. At first, with the sun shining and the wind quiet, it was more fun than work. Besides, 1 kept telling myself, if we waited for the spring thaws, we’d be housebound until April.
But the pleasure wore off fast. While the family that prays together may stay together, the family that shovels together only aches and complains.
Fortunately, the end was in sight when the handle on the shovel snapped. We taped it back and continued on the final stretch with more care and a lot less vigor, supplementing our efforts by kicking through three-foot drifts.
Finally, we got the car out to the stop sign between Bessie Bell and Red Oak and left it there to trudge back to the house at around 5 p.m.,
