Withdraw Or Resign
In a second letter dated August 3 from Garvey, Atkins was asked to furnish written confirmation by Wednesday, August 15, of either his withdrawal as a political candidate or notification of his resignation. “If this is not received by this date, I must assume that you intend to pursue your candidacy and will have no alternative but to remove you from the payroll effective at the end of that workday,” Garver warned.
Atkins has been employed by the Highway Department for 14 years and is now an “A” inspector with the Manassas residency office. Prior to working out of Manassas, he was assigned to Department offices in Warrenton and Fairfax. Since his transfer to Prince William County over four years ago, he has not been involved with any Highway Department projects in Rappahannock, he reported.
Atkins said his candidacy had created a “hassle” with his employer since he made his announcement to run in March. He added that he was forced to hire an attorney before he could get an answer on whether Department policy barred his candidacy for supervisor. “It’s all a matter of interpretation of policy,” he said. “They can interpret it anyway they want to.”
