Females Only
In addition to the five adult females, Carol has six puppies in her kennels. Most she’ll sell, keeping only an outstanding individual or two. She has no stud dog. “You don’t get as many good males as females,” she explained. “I’ve not yet bred a male that I’ve felt was of high enough quality to keep.”
Instead of having her own stud, she sends her bitches to the top males in the country—as far away as New York and Ohio—to be bred. She’s a walking encyclopedia on who’s who in the shepherd world and can reel off the names of the top studs like a youngster going through the list of National League batting leaders.
She has stacks of books from the German Shepherd Kennel club. “Breeder's tools,” Carol calls them. In the books, she can keep track of which champion stud has fathered what litter and can follow the progress of puppies as they enter show ring competition. “That way, you learn which blood lines click,” she explained.
