The tree should be cut so as to leave a low stump and minimal damage to surrounding trees. Pieces of wood four inches or more in diameter should be split into two or more pieces. This will permit more rapid drying as well as facilitate handling. Most wood splits easier when green. Know the maximum length of wood your fireplace or stove can use, and cut the pieces two to three inches shorter.
Possible sources of firewood include private landowners with woodlots or recently harvested timber, national forests, certain state forests, land clearing for housing and shopping center development and highway and utility rights-of-way, certain game commission lands.

In addition, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is compiling a directory of firewood sources for this fall and winter. Persons or firms with firewood to sell can have a free listing in the monthly 1979-80 Firewood Directory by supplying VDACS with their name and address (including county), phone number with area code, business hours or hours when orders may be placed, types and sizes of wood available and type of sale (customers cut wood, customer pick-up or home delivery).
