Farm Costs Up
Production expenses of American fanners are expected to rise about 13 per cent in 1979, reaching a total of $110 billion or more, according to Virginia Tech Extension specialists in agricultural economics.
Nearly all the increase in expenses is due to higher prices of inputs, rather than quantity used. The total amount reflects a small increase in the quantity of seed and fertilizer, but a 10 percent reduction in purchased livestock and little change in other items.
The index of prices paid by farmers for all items in 1979 is expected to be 12 to 14 per cent higher than last year’s average.
