Apple
Festival Set
The fifth annual Apple Harvest Arts and Crafts Festival will be held at the City Recreation Park in Winchester on Saturday and Sunday, September 22 and 23. Activities begin on Friday, September 21 with an “apple fare” featuring orchard, packing house and cannery tours and horticultural speakers.
On Saturday and Sunday, over 125 artists and craftspersons will present a full schedule of demonstrations throughout the day. Apple butter making and apple peeling contests will also be held, getting started as early as 5 a.m. when contestants light wood fires under the huge kettles. The apple peeling contest, managed by a 4-H Honor Club, will run front 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Anyone may enter for 25 cents which pays for an apple and a paring knife. There will be cash prizes awarded in both contests.
In addition to the contests, craft demonstrations and musical entertainment, judges will select the final winners in the Winchester Evening Star’s apple variety recipe contest on Saturday. Sallie Douglas, "Miss Virginia Apple Queen” of 1979, will attend the weekend festivities.
