They were helped in the food rescuing operation by Sperryville farmer John Clark. The new truck was low on gas and stations selling diesel fuel were all closed. To keep the engine running, Clark donated 20 gallons from his farm supplies, according to the firemen.
Throughout the long weekend hours, the WVFD volunteers managed to save about 15 freezers—all with full or near full loads of meat. By a conservative estimate, approximately $3,000 worth of food was preserved.
Firemen predict that the truck will also be the hero in reduced fire insurance premiums. With just the old 1946 Mack truck, the town wasn’t considered to have a fire department for insurance purposes. Higher premiums based on the distance to the nearest neighboring fire station reflected this lack.
With the new truck, homeowners will see a substantial savings next year in premiums, according to fire department spokesmen.
