During cold weather the Vice-president must have a fire almost every day,” Northup noted. The President has a few personal items on his desk—a giant peanul, a photograph of his wife Rosalynn and one of Carter and brother Billie with their arms around each other, according to the news from Northup.
Neatness Must Count
With one exception, all the White House offices are neat as a pin. “The desks are immaculate. There’s nothing in the in or out boxes, no pencils to be seen, no files,” Northup reported. “A visitor gets the impression that it’s a Yerv important place for show with the work done in places where we weren’t allowed to g'>-”
The exception is Jody Powell’s room. “That was a mess. There were papers all over and ticker tape machines going. It looked very much like a working office,” recalled Northup.
Ham Jordan’s office also had a few surprises—several hundred tennis balls stored in bags, cans and piles with a, few racquets lying here and there around the room. “It was clear that at any spare moment during the day, he’s out on the court,” Northup deduced.
Chim-Chiminey’s guarantee of no mess was put to the test at the White House. “There’s a $25,000 carpet in the oval office, a gift to the President. We were told if we messed up that carpet, we’re in big trouble,” Northup said.
In their traditional top hats and black tuxedos, the partners were an unusual sight on Pennsylvania Avenue. One Secret Service agent demanded to know who the strangers were and didn’t believe when told they were chimney sweeps. “He followed me up on the roof, watched me get my equipment out and just shook his head, saying ‘I’ve been here so many years, I thought I’d seen everything but I’ve never seen this!’ ” Northup related.
