read an article on chimney sweeping, did some research and started my own business.” said Northup. He purchased a system designed to clean chimneys from a firm in Connecticut that came with a very extensive and thorough handbook. “I practiced on my friends and relatives doing work for free to get used to the process and then started real work in January. We expanded by buying out a chimney sweeping company in D. C. two months ago. Now my partner serves the metropolitan area and I serve rural Virginia. I'm the only resident chimney sweep in Rappahannock,'' Northup noted.

"You get some really weird looks as a chimney sweep. We were in the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Washington. People were running out into the street to shake hands with us. women were blowing kisses—all because we're supposed to bring good luck.”

Northup likes the reaction he gets, especially from kids. On a recent job, he met a two-year-old whose face lit up like a beacon when he saw the top hat and tails. "Are you a king?” he asked the chimney sweep.

Jim Northup may not be royalty but as the ChimChimiuey Sweep, he can brag that he's been to the President's house.
