Northup and Callaghan wrote to the Pennsylvania Avenue address. “We got a letter back two days later, asking us to come in and give an estimate,” he recalled.

According to Northup, Carter was in Japan when they started on the chimneys. “The White House was very quiet. It’s when he goes away that they bring in the carpenters, carpet layers and chimney sweeps for maintenance.”
