Shenandoah National Park will permit the gathering of firewood along the northernmost section of Skyline Drive from Oct. 22 through Nov. 2. “The very unusual snowstorm on Oct. 10—which deposited as much as 17'/2 inches of heavy, wet snow along the Blue Ridge and caused great breakage of park trees—calls for unusual procedures in the cleanup of downed trees and limbs along Skyline Drive,” Superintendent Robert R. Jacobsen explained.
Although otherwise strictly prohibited during normal conditions by park policies and regulations, the public will be permitted, during daylight hours for 12 days, to gather down wood along Skyline Drive between the intersection of U. S. Highway 211 at Thornton Gap and the park’s north entrance at Front Royal. People will be allowed to gather wood from the fallen trees within the Skyline Drive road right-ofway or from those down trees which extend into the Skyline Drive roadway.
