Erich Winter mantel, German exchange student sponsored by the Rappahannock Lions Club, recently returned home after spending several weeks in the county as the guest of Capt. and Mrs. Howard Holschuh.
While in Rappahannock, he sampled a big chunk of American life not seen by the standard tourist. Erich attended the October meeting of the board of supervisors to watch local government at its most grass roots level.
For a taste of volunteerism, he helped Lions Club members peel, quarter and core apples in preparation for the club's annual apple butter sale.
He dropped in on language classes at Rappahannock County High School where he wowed the kids with his wide smile, friendly manner and command of French, and got a first-hand glimpse of the differences between the German and U.S. education programs. As a fourth year student in medical school at the University of Tuebingen, Erich was particularly interested in the operation of the Rappahannock Clinic where he spent hours observing Doctors Jerry Martin and Werner Krebser.
