Free Education
In another major difference between education systems, Erich noted that German universities are free. “At least the education is free—free to those who qualify (for entrance). That’s paid by taxes. I have to pay only for room and board and for the books I want to have for myself,” Erich said. "
Tuebingen is one of three cities in Germany that have the title of “university towns.” About a third of Tuebingen’s 60,000 population is made up of students, according to Erich. “Life is dominated by university students...student life spills into the streets, the restaurants. Tuebingen absorbs all the cultural activities from the region around it.”
“Students from the whole spectrum of different disciplines—philosophy, language, history, geology, biology, law, medicine—all meet,’’ Erich continued. “That’s quite a nice thing. They meet and exchange ideas—all that with a glass of wine or beer,” he added with a laugh. As in the U.S., German college students have the choice of living in dorms or finding quarters off campus.
