For most chimneys, cleaning once a year should be sufficient, according to Northup. But he hastened to add that frequency of cleaning depends on the age of the chimney, the type of stove and the type of wood.
Burn only good season hardwood like oak and hickory, he advised and let it season for one year. Avoid soft woods such as pine and poplar and above all, avoid burning paper. “Burning trash in your fireplace or stove is the worst thing you can do to your chimney. Use as little paper as possible, just enough to start the fire. Depend primarily on kindling,” he said.
