If you have noticed candle wax spots on your carpet as a result of using candles for light when the electricity was off two weeks ago, here are four methods to remove them.
A rounded spoon or the dull back of a dinner knife can be used to scrape over the waxy area. This will shave off some of the wax. If wax is only on the surface, repeated scraping will remove a large portion of the wax. Great care must be taken to prevent cutting and fuzzing of carpet fibers and yarns. The small fibers encased in the wax can be broken or pulled out. Excessive scraping will result in a distorted, fuzzed area. This method is most effective in removing wax on the surface of dense loop pile constructions.
Ice cubes, dry ice and Freon gas may be put in contact with wax to freeze it and make it harder. Then, the wax is broken into small pieces and pulled out of the carpet. Once again, great care should be used as pulling the wax encompassing the fibers will produce a lot of unsightly fuzzing. This procedure is most satisfactory for wax just on the surface of very dense constructions; for large quantities deeper in the pile or a soft textured carpet, it should not be used.
The fastest method of removing wax is to apply heat to melt the wax and, at the same time, absorb the liquid wax out of the pile. This can be accomplished by placing a white paper or cloth towel over the wax and touching the spot with a warm iron. If this is done properly, heat from the iron will melt the wax and, at the same time, it will be picked up by the towel. To eliminate the possibility of damage to carpet fibers, a low setting on the iron should be used and the iron should always be held in your hand and not placed on the towel. Only the point of the iron should be fouched against the towel. The iron should be lifted as soon as the wax melts. It is easy to tell when wax melts as the point of the iron will sink into the towel and carpet.
