A pre-election poll conducted by the Rappahannock News shows incumbent sheriff W. A. Buntin with a strong lead over challengers John Walker Jenkins and Marshall Corbin while commonwealth attorney candidate Douglas Baumgardner holds a comfortable edge over opponent Peter Luke.
In a random selection of registered voters reached by telephone on Monday and Tuesday evening, Buntin won support from 72 percent of the persons contacted. His lead ranged from a two-toone margin in the Washington and Sperryville areas to unanimous endorsement in Chester Gap. Countywide, Jenkins and tCorbin trailed with 14.7 percent and 8.8 per cent respectively. The undecided response was negligible — only 4.4 percent.
With incumbent George Davis not standing for reflection, the commonwealth attorney’s race is between two young men new to county government. Countywide, Douglas Baumgardner won support from 52.9 percent of the registered voters contacted in the Rappahannock News Poll. Peter Luke trailed with 27.9 percent. A large number—19.2 percent—of the voters were undecided in the commonwealth attorney’s race.
