The incident is the first in, Virginia in which a state game warden killed a civilian, although other game wardens in the past have been attacked while on duty.
Because the bow and arrow season for hunting deer is* open and the “gun season” still is closed, Campbell and Dalton, like game wardens throughout the state, had been assigned to night patrol to check for persons “spotlighting.”
Spotlighting, or the use of high-beamed lights at night ( to temporarily blind and immobolize game for an easier kill, is illegal.
Warden Campbell on Oct. 16, three nights before the fatal shooting, had arrested David Lambert, a friend of Wyne’s, for allegedly spotlighting deer in the wooded area west of Marshall.
