Total monthly speeding arrests dropped slightly during September when compared with the same month last year, according to the Virginia State Police, but the overall 1979 total is 23.3 percent above 1978.
In instances where speeding arrests involved drivers exceeding the 55 miles per hour speed limit, the State Police report a 23.9 percent increase over last year. Speeding arrests for commercial vehicles are currently 44 percent ahead of last year.
Total speeding arrests for January through September this year are 160,414 compared to 130,097 for the same period last year. There have been 159,891 arrests for exceeding the 55_ miles per hour speed limit, and 39,481 arrests involving commercial vehicles.
For the month of September, there were 18,047 total arrests compared to 18,249 a year ago. Of this total, 17,967 were for exceeding the 55 miles per hour speed limit and 4,115 involved commercial vehicles.
