‘‘I have an old type student’s room. It’s right under the roof—cold in winter and hot in the summer. I have an old stove that I feed with wood or coal. It’s always an adventure on winter mornings to see if the stove works or not,” Erich said.
Although in Rappahannock for only a few weeks, Erich arrived in the U. S. in early July. His first stop was Los Angeles, Calif., where he lived in an apartment near St. Vincent's Hospital.
“I followed surgery, like a doctor learning how to specialize. I used looking, feeling and hearing to learn more about American medicine and improve my English language.”
From California he went on to Montreal and Ontario in Canada to spend more time at hospitals there while brushing up on his French.
Everything Bigger
In California, Erich s first impression of the United States was one of size. “It's so large—the streets are broader, the cars bigger and the people are different. Life here has to be very different from Europe. There are much more cultures in a smaller space...In the Museum of History and Technology (in Washington, D. C.) I found a very good explanation of America. It’s a ‘nation of nations’, all mixed up together. You come out with a whole new thing.”
