According to McDaniel, it was his deep faith, exceptional courage and duty to the Code of Honor which helped him to forge a formula of survival that sustained the three to four hundred P.O.W’s during their year of barbaric torture.
During his imprisonment, McDaniel was one of those must brutally tortured because of his active role in camp communication which maintained a strong esprit de corps.
He is the author of “Before Honor”, a book depicting his struggle to survive as well as the history of many fellow prisoners.
Capt. McDaniel has been awarded the Navy Cross, two Silver Star medals, Legion of Merit with combat V, Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars with combat V, five individual air medals, seven Strike-Flight air medals, two Navy Commendation medals with combat V, two Purple Hearts, Navy Achievement medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Ua7it Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, two National Defense service medals, Vietnam Service medal and Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal.
He lives in Kinston, N. C. with his wife, daughter and two sons.
