Judge Archibald Aiken Jr. of Loudoun County sits on the general district court bench and will probably be joined by John Alexander from Fauquier County, endorsed by the local bar associations as replacement for recently retired Judge William Carson.
“Unless the juvenile and domestic relations judge is from Rappahannock, we won’t have any judge on the circuit residing in the county,” noted Peter Luke, president of the Rappahannock Bar Association.
Luke noted that judges Moffett and Snead, both Washington residents, have been readily accessible to local attorneys even though the majority of the work for both judges has been in Loudoun or Fauquier. Both have been willing to meet with attorneys at the court house after hours and on weekends.
“The bar association feels it’s very important that at least one judge on the circuit be a resident of Rappahannock.” said Luke. “It will work a hardship on local citizens if there’s no judge available to sign orders in an emergency,” he concluded.
Appointments to fill judgeships vacated by Snead, Moffett and Carson will be made by the General Assembly in its 1980 session that begins this week.
