“The transportation costs will be out of sight,” Bruce countered.
The supervisor chairman maintained that cost of transporting dead animals to Front Royal or Culpeper for incineration should be weighed against the cost of the county building its own incinerator.
Each dog must be kept for five days before it can be disposed of, Bruce said, a regulation which could require three or four trips per week to an incinerator.
He reported that Culpeper’s dog warden formerly disposed of dead animals “here and there, wherever he could” until the supervisors approved burying the carcasses in the county dump. Now, however, Culpeper County follows the same procedure as Page, Warren and Fauquier, paying the animal shelter to gas and incinerate unclaimed strays, he said.
