From Garbled Beginnings
Righter’s songs are intensely personal. “The songs I write are always about something I feel very strongly at the time.”
“Sometimes, they don’t even sound like English,” Margie added.
“It’s like speaking in tongues when I start out,” Steve agreed. He explained that his songs begin with an emotion—the way he feels about Margie, depression about life, his job, even the weather. The emotion evolves into a few phrases that Steve reworks over and over again until they begin to make sense. “Once I establish what the song is about, that’s where skill comes in—the turning of a piece of raw emotion into something coherent.” Righter has scores and scores of songs, some in old notebooks dating back to his teenage years.
