Steve joked. “I‘m a poet who used a guitar to keep myself in tune.” > He began writing songs almost as soon as he started strumming a guitar. After his parents gave him his first instrument, he sent away for a teach-it-to-yourself course. “You know the kind they advertise in comic books. ‘Learn to play the guitar in just seven days’ ”. He laughed. “Don’t you believe it!”

Calluses on his fingers had a lot longer than seven days to develop before Righter mastered chord changes. “I was fortunate to have friends who were learning at the same time. It made everything piuch easier. When you have competition to motivate you, you learn a lot faster.”

Three months later, he began writing songs as well, “It’s not something you do because you want |o do it. It’s something you do because you have j to,” he explained. He and his friends organized a band that played local spots in the Tidewater area, featuring Righter’s original works. "Artiscally, I was one of the leaders in the band but emotionally, I was the most unstable,” he said.
