Mrs. Pipsie Bischoff, known to most Rappahannock people for her prowess as a tennis player, is also a recognized appraiser of silver with special emphasis on antique work. She will present a program on this topic at the library in Washington on Wednesday, January 21, at 7:30 p.m.
In addition to examining some of the treasures brought in by her audience, she will discuss how to learn more &6out family heirlooms and other silver pieces through research materials which may be obtained from the library.
Even amateurs, according to Bischoff, can examine an object with regard to its condition, a workmanship and design and can soon learn how to identify marks, country and period of origiij. More professional skills may be required to determine the rarity of the piece and often it is upon this that the value will depend. Bischoff will explain also how to compute troy ounces, the measurement used for silver, and how they relate to ounces and pounds.
