Created to meet the needs of this high risk population, the WIC Program is available in each of Virginia’s local health departments. WIC provides supplemental foods to pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children up to age five, who have a nutritional need and are income eligible. Its goal is to serve as an adjunct to good health care during these critical periods of growth and development to help prevent health problems and improve the health status of these persons.
Pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women and children under age five receive food packages, which include milk, cheese, eggs, vitamin C-rich fruit juice, and iron-fortified cereal. For infants, WIC provides ironfortified infant formula, ironfortified baby cereal and fruit juice. In addition to foods, WIC also provides nutrition education to teach participants how to plan, prepare and maintain a wellbalanced diet.
