Bruce recalled that he previously took 26 dogs at $2 per head to Front Royal for disposal but had been ordered by the supervisors to stop because the board considered the expense excessive.
Luke maintained that the best disposal method is landfill burial.
Dogs could be held past the five day minimum with executions carried out twice a month and burial by backhoe Hi ' - th* landfill; ’’Wood suggested.
“Why keep them five days?” asked Luke.
Supervisor Clarence Baldwin explained that state law requires the minimum retention period order to give people a chance to claim a strayed pet. “They can sue the county if they can prove their dog wasn’t kept five days” before being destroyed, he said.
The supervisor requested Bruce to check again with adjoining counties on sharing cremation facilities and report back to the board in February.
