Any dog that receives a rabies vaccination at less than 12 months of age should be revaccinated one year later, according to a resolution passed by the State Board of Health. The resolution supports the State Board of Agriculture and Consumer Services in its recognition of the recommendations for vaccine use in the National Association of State Public Health Veterinarian’s Compendium of Animal Rabies Vaccines.
Grayson B. Miller, Jr., M.D., State Epidemiologist, explained, “Rabies is virtually always fatal. The risk of transmitting rabies to humans has been considerably reduced by the active immunization program for dogs carried on by veterinarians practicing in the State. Any dog that receives rabies vaccine prior to one year of age may not develop sufficient antibodies against the disease and should be revscclnsted one year after the first injection^*
